After Images description
“An afterimage is what we are left with when the performance is over" - Arlene Croce
After Images tracks the remarkable history of Australian Dance Theatre, our nation’s oldest continuing contemporary dance company. In celebration of the company’s 60th birthday, it revisits iconic works by ADT’s six Artistic Directors—Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, Jonathan Taylor, Leigh Warren, Meryl Tankard, Garry Stewart and Daniel Riley—that have moved and inspired audiences, and left an indelible mark on contemporary dance locally and internationally.
After Images also reflects on the fragility of the contemporary dance repertoire, in which works of great resonance and beauty disappear. Diving deep into public archives and private collections, the exhibition attempts to reclaim choreographies through the archival traces of photographic image, film footage, costume and other ephemera, re-activating some of the company’s most revolutionary works.
In equal part celebration, reclamation and meditation on loss, After Images tracks the evolution of a company in constant motion. This once in a lifetime exhibition is a testament to the enduring importance of Australian Dance Theatre and an opportunity to celebrate the artists who have forever changed dance in Australia and across the globe.
